Biography
Paolo Medici was born in Rome in 1955.
As a boy, he had the privilege of knowing the great Maestro Corrado Cagli.
Medici frequently visited his studio from 1970 to 1976; he watched him work, and as Corrado Cagli himself once told him, “Monkey see, monkey do.”
Frottage was just one of the many techniques Cagli used, but Medici was so captivated by it that he adopted it as his exclusive painting technique. He had never used brushes; his works are made with oil pastels rubbed onto thin sheets of paper, allowing him to bring out the cliché he’s using.
Like Cagli, he also used clichés until 2002, holding them fixed under the paper. Over time, Medici discovered that by rotating certain types of clichés, he could blend the colors, achieving a more compact texture. This discovery enabled him to create flesh tones on the bodies more effectively. The skin today is more luminous, and he can work much better with the nuances of chiaroscuro, achieving such depth that the result is comparable to that of oil painting.
This was a real innovation in the frottage technique, and therefore today some have called Paolo Medici the Master of Frottage.
