Sonia Riccio

She was born in Pozzuoli in 1976, near Naples.

Sonia is an autodidact. She has never had any artistic mentor, but rather acknowledge her talent thanks to her strong urge to express herself through painting. Her pictorial language is abstract, minimalistic and informal. Her pieces tell us about the variety of feelings and states of mind. Each work gives free rein to her outlet of inner and deep feelings thanks to her spiritual quest of such emotions of the moment:

fear, rage, power and lightness. A quest that led to the monochrome concept in her work. Her primordial essence is the colour Black that has always accompanied her as an experimentation of the absence of colour. Black is seduction, a synthesis of contrasting emotions that allow her to travel across its dark rooms. Colour takes over forms rather than signs, and the lines tend towards the simplification of his pictorial gesture. Her art evolved as she focused on the opposite monochrome: colour White. “The Temptation of White” is a transformative

act towards her spiritual quest. In 2014, her painting process came to an abrupt interruption for some inexplicable reason. Perhaps because she felt the need for change. In 2015, she started painting white monochromes, almost as if she wanted to represent her spiritual evolution, a pictorial evolution already in place in the black works in which the simplification of the sign is evident. Since 2016 everything has been moving on two tracks, black and white, in search of a perfect balance, which she eventually found in the production of the first "Black

& White" (2019) where traces cross over and give continuity to the two non-colours. The works in Blue turns into a moment of

passage, as a sort of mediation and lightness. “Blue helps me mediate between such powerful colours as Black and White”.
