Biography

Originally from Toowoomba, Australian stylist and visual artist Debra Hutton is increasingly growing attention in the Australian art market for her vibrant abstract paintings. Based in Noosa Queensland, Hutton’s paintings explore the relationship between colour, composition and mark making.

Travelling across the Mediterranean during her 14 years as a Qantas Flight attendant taught Hutton how to weave moments and themes from other countries into her paintings. With a specific interest in Italy sparked by her Italian brother in-law, Hutton now wanders around its romantic cities and coastal towns for pleasure, exploring her connection to the landscape and painting about how it makes her feel. She focuses on how the light touches the buildings, trees and flowers, and experiments with how these qualities can be brought to life with paint, brush and canvas. She often works off photographs she herself or her clients have taken. Matching her pallet with the pallet of the image to bring it to life in her distinct and ever-growing style.

Painting is about feeling, mood and memories for Hutton. The Mediterranean has such a deep and present history, and her painting practice allows her to acknowledge, respect and pay homage to its rich culture. She honours artists like Van Gogh, Monet and Renoir, inspired by their Impressionistic styles and learning from the legacy they gifted to the artists that now follow them.
