Luisa Russo

Born in Naples in 1976, after graduating from the Filippo Palizzi Art Institute, she earned her diploma from the Higher Institute of Design in Naples.

Her diverse experiences in the field of graphic design led her to explore geometric abstraction.

The artist states: “My entire artistic training is based on my experience in the field of graphic design.

The rules that form its foundation have been progressively transposed into my visual practice and subsequently refined, until reaching their purest expression. My early works can be described as almost formal exercises, intended to explore how far I could push the boundaries in the third dimension, representing optical illusions that until then had existed only in two dimensions.

Although my research is based on very precise rules and is entirely controlled, in recent years I have increasingly felt the need to transcend these rules.

From such observations arises the series Deconstruction of a Known Process. These are open works, capable of being interpreted in infinite ways; they no longer have a single way of inhabiting space.

This leads to my most recent paper creations, where the medium is no longer a static, inert, silent space—waiting to be defined by the addition and interplay of marks and colors—in order to tell a story that is not its own, that no longer belongs to it. It has shed its conditioning; now it is a void filled with everything, waiting to come to life. Just as a person, through incisions, lifts their eyelids to enter the world, so too, in perpetual motion, the cut paper comes to life, shattering and transcending conventional space. Air flows through it and defines it; a play of solids and voids, light and shadow in constant flux, caresses and warms the surface.”
